Would you have guessed? European and American noses react the same
Published at: Sunday, 01. April 2007
One spray of Azelastine in each nostril twice a day is enough for the treatment of hay fever. That was the conclusion of a recent study conducted by American scientists on a group of over 500 patients. Background info: the nasal spray is approved for two sprays per nostril in the U.S., whereas most of the European countries have approved the dosage of one spray per nostril. The study proves that the Europeans have got it right.
The majority of participating patients reported that the drug was easier to handle with one spray than with the double amount, without reducing its effectiveness in relieving their symptoms.
Symptoms such as sneezing, itchy nose, runny nose and nasal congestion were improved after one spray in a majority of the patients tested. The number of single-spray patients complaining of a bitter aftertaste or drowsiness after taking the spray was also considerably reduced in comparison to those patients taking a double-dose.
The results confirm the European Dosage Guidelines, which allot one spray of the active ingredient Azelastine per nostril twice daily.
The active ingredient Azelastine is an antihistamine and belongs to the family of modern H1-Blockers. It is used in the treatment of seasonal and year-round hay fever in patients 6 years and older.
